Start with context

  1. 循序渐进 (xún xù jiàn jìn): progress step by step. 练口语可以循序渐进,先说短句,再尝试完整表达。
  2. 半途而废 (bàn tú ér fèi): give up before completing a task. 这项计划还没完成,不要因为一次困难就半途而废。
  3. 一举两得 (yì jǔ liǎng dé): gain two benefits from one action. 用中文记录旅行,既练表达又留纪念,一举两得。
  4. 画蛇添足 (huà shé tiān zú): add something unnecessary that spoils the result. 解释已经很清楚,再加不相关细节就可能画蛇添足。

Self-check

Which idiom fits increasing difficulty gradually? Which fits abandoning a task halfway? Answer first, then check the meanings. Write a new sentence for one of the other two.

An idiom is not automatically better than a plain sentence. Check its tone and context before using it. These original examples explain usage; they are not a historical account of the idioms’ origins.
